Github education coupon applied, but still hitting monthly chat message limit in VSCode Copilot

Hello,

I currently have an active faculty coupon applied to my GitHub account, and my GitHub profile shows:

You have a current faculty coupon applied. Find more information on your benefits here!

However, in VSCode, GitHub Copilot Chat still displays the following message:

You have reached your monthly chat message limit. Upgrade to Copilot Pro (30-day free trial) or wait until September 1, 2025, when the limit will reset.

Is there something I need to re-link or refresh between my GitHub account and VSCode?

Yes that's true
Education plan gives you GitHub pro which has a limited number of requests, once you hit the limit (and you will do it fast) Copilot will you disabled till the next month.
You can take extra requests but you will need to pay 0.04 USD for each request.

last month we had unlimited access but now everything is changed

This is expected behavior. The GitHub Education faculty coupon gives you GitHub Pro for free, but it does not include unlimited Copilot Chat.

Here’s how it works:

GitHub Pro (via the faculty coupon) includes Copilot access, but with a monthly message cap in Copilot Chat.

Once you hit that cap, Copilot Chat will pause until the next monthly reset (e.g., September 1, 2025).

If you want unlimited Copilot Chat, that requires a Copilot Pro subscription, which is separate from the Pro plan.

So there’s nothing you need to re-link in VS Code — your coupon is active and working correctly. The message you’re seeing just means you’ve already reached the included monthly quota.

👉 Your options are:

Wait until the reset date (the limit will refresh automatically).

Upgrade to Copilot Pro if you need unlimited chat usage.

If you believe your quota is being limited incorrectly (for example, if you haven’t used many requests this month), the best step is to open a ticket with GitHub Support

This behavior is expected and is not an issue with account linking or VS Code. The GitHub Education or faculty coupon provides GitHub Pro benefits, which include access to Copilot, but Copilot Chat comes with a limited monthly message quota. Once this quota is reached, Copilot Chat is temporarily disabled until the next monthly reset date.

There is no need to re-link or refresh your GitHub account in VS Code, as the coupon is already active and working correctly. Unlimited Copilot Chat is only available with a separate Copilot Pro subscription. If continued access is required, you can either wait for the monthly reset or upgrade to Copilot Pro.
